When I work in a group, one of my strengths is critical thinking. I often look at different sides of an idea and consider what would work and what wouldn’t before making a decision. A general example of this would be planning. When I start a project or a task, I like to plan it out first so we don’t get half-way through the work and realize that most of the group is not okay with the idea.
Another strength of mine is being open minded. To me, this means being open to ideas and considering other aspects and opinions other than yours. Yesterday, when we were planning our posters and coming up with ideas, one of the ideas that came up was not my favorite. Instead of shooting it down at first, I allowed others to add to the idea and because we had a more open discussion, the idea changed into something that represented our idea better. As an introvert, I find taking on leadership roles challenging. Leadership to me is steering the group towards a focus or goal, and taking charge of a situation when no one else is. Yesterday when our group was off task, I felt like I could have been the one to bring us back together and to complete our poster, but I didn’t. Another challenge of mine is being a risk taker. Although I am open to new ideas, when it comes to something risky that could result in our group failing, I usually am not willing. An example of this would be over planning when it comes to projects and because of that sometimes we use more time than necessary. I do this because I feel like if we don’t plan everything out perfectly, something could go wrong. Because these challenges sometimes result in less quality work, I am working to improve them. With leadership I have realized that I don’t have to be loud to direct a group, and if our group needs a leader, I will try to step up to that role. As far as being a risk taker goes, I think I need to realize that some of the best ideas come out of taking risks, and I could have better work because of them.
